Highly
controversial with an intense storyline between religion
passion, Polvo Enamorado, shown at the Miami International
Film Festival 2004, has often been described as the
Peruvian version of The Crime of Father Amaro (Nominated
Best Foreign Language Film) Natalia, a young girl in
her twenties is married to Matias Rosales, the 60-year
old Mayor of a coastal town in Peru. A devout Catholic,
Natalia left the convent as a novice at 17 to marry
Matias, who promised he would respect her chastity.
He loves her intensely - so much so, that at night,
he drops sleeping powder in her coffee so he can rape
her. Sullen Natalia attends Mass daily, takes part in
religious processions and otherwise has little to do
in the dusty town. When the old parish priest retires,
he's replaced by Santiago, a handsome man in his 30s,
and Natalia's life takes an unexpected twist: she falls
in love. Santiago, a priest with a social conscience,
starts strong but succumbs to passion. Torn between
the divine and the carnal, the righteous and the unjust,
Santiago must summon his strength to choose which life
he will lead. |
